Hi, I’m Liz.
I fractured my right hip in a car accident when I was sixteen years old. I was young, healthy, and resilient – it healed and I never looked back.
Years later, through my own Pilates practice, I became aware of my hip’s restriction. Walking wasn’t a problem but a slight turn of the leg was a bit of a chore. You could almost hear it creak-creak-creaking.
Today, my hip continues to be a work in progress. Ignore it and it’s not happy. Overuse it and it’s even grumpier. Because of Pilates… I now know that during recovery new tissue is developed and it’s degree of elasticity is dependent on the directions it is moved in. Walking forward (as we usually do) created the flexibility for my hip’s forward motion. Moving the leg from side to side or in a circular motion was not part of my daily activity at the time that my tissue was rebuilding and as a result, its movement is limited.
Working against hardened scar tissue isn’t easy and I may never recover full range of motion. But, Pilates improves my mobility and I feel good while doing it. Had I have know to include Pilates training in my initial rehabilitation, I would enjoy more freedom of movement today. However, when we know better, we do better. At some point in the healing process, there must be movement… and that’s why I am here today.
